The art of values-based living: 8 strategies for a meaningful life

Living a values-based life is not just a concept, but an art. The crux of it lies in aligning your actions with the values that hold profound meaning to you.

Hi there, I’m Jeanette Brown, a Life Transition Coach and creator of Reset Your Life Compass. In my journey, I’ve discovered that embracing this art can make your life more meaningful and satisfying.

In this article, I’ll be sharing some strategies that can help you navigate the journey of living a values-based life.

These are not just strategies, but tools that can guide you in making decisions aligned with your core values.

1) Embrace change

Life is a constant flux, and change is inevitable. I’ve seen many struggle with changes, big or small. But here’s a perspective – change isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

The key here is to not resist change, but rather, to embrace it. When you resist change, you’re holding onto the past or fearing the future. But when you embrace it, you’re living in the present and aligning yourself with your values.

Remember, change is not the enemy; it’s the pathway to a more fulfilling life. So when life throws you in the swirling sea of change, don’t just float – learn to navigate and sail towards your values-based life.

2) Understand your core values

Understanding yourself is the foundation of leading a value-based life. It reminds me of a famous quote by Oscar Wilde, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken.”

Over the years, I’ve found that people often struggle because they try to fit into someone else’s idea of who they should be. But remember, you’re unique and there’s no one else quite like you.

It’s time to delve deeper into understanding your core values. These are the guiding principles that shape your behavior, influence your choices, and ultimately, steer the course of your life.

To help you with this, I’ve created a simple yet powerful tool—the Defining Your Values Exercise. This exercise will guide you in identifying and understanding your values, serving as a compass towards a more meaningful and values-based life.

Remember, knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom. So, take some time to understand your unique self and let your core values guide your path.

3) Set meaningful goals

Living a value-based life isn’t about floating aimlessly in the sea of existence. Instead, it’s about setting a course and sailing towards meaningful goals that align with your core values.

Goals give us direction, purpose, and a sense of achievement when we reach them. But not all goals are created equal. Some may look appealing but might not be in sync with our values, leading to dissatisfaction and regret.

So how do you set meaningful goals? It starts with brutal honesty. Ask yourself: “What do I truly want? What makes me feel alive? What aligns with my core values?” These questions can help you peel back the layers of societal expectation and self-deception to reveal your true desires.

Remember, a goal without meaning is like a ship without a compass—it can sail, but it won’t reach a fulfilling destination. So set goals that resonate with your values and work towards them diligently for a truly meaningful life.

4) Steer your own direction

Navigating through life is a personal journey. While it’s okay to seek advice and learn from others’ experiences, ultimately, you are the captain of your ship.

Often, we let external factors – societal norms, peer pressure, or even familial expectations – dictate our life’s course. But in doing so, we might end up sailing in a direction that doesn’t resonate with our core values.

It’s time to take the wheel and steer your own direction. It might be scary at first, taking responsibility for your own life choices. But it’s only when you start making decisions aligned with your values that you’ll find the route to genuine happiness and fulfillment.

Remember, you are the author of your life’s story. Don’t hand over the pen to someone else. Write your own chapters, make your own choices, and steer your ship towards a value-based life.

5) Journal your journey

Writing is a powerful tool for reflection and self-discovery. In my work, I’ve seen how keeping a journal can profoundly impact the journey towards a value-based life.

Journaling provides you with a space to express your thoughts, emotions, and desires. It’s like having an intimate conversation with yourself, where you can explore your values, track your progress towards your goals, and reflect on your experiences.

This is where my course, Reset Your Life Compass, comes in. One of its key components is journaling, which allows you to tap into your inner wisdom, understand yourself better, and align your life with your core values.

So grab a pen and start writing your story. You might be surprised at the insights you gain about yourself and how it can guide you in crafting a fulfilling, values-based life. Remember, the journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step – or in this case, a single word.

6) Change your habits

Living a values-based life is not just about setting meaningful goals and steering your direction—it’s also about changing your habits.

Our daily habits shape our lives. They are the building blocks of our routines and, ultimately, our future. But often, we get stuck in patterns that don’t serve us or align with our values.

It’s time to break free from these unhealthy patterns and cultivate habits that foster a values-based life. Whether it’s adopting a healthy lifestyle, practicing mindfulness, or dedicating time to self-care—choose habits that resonate with your core values.

Remember, change doesn’t happen overnight. It requires commitment, consistency, and patience. But with every small change you make, you’re one step closer to living a fulfilling life that aligns with your values. So start today, change your habits, and transform your life.

7) Find your purpose

“Life is never made unbearable by circumstances, but only by lack of meaning and purpose,” said psychiatrist and Holocaust survivor, Viktor Frankl. It’s a powerful reminder of the importance of purpose in leading a fulfilling life.

Purpose gives you a reason to wake up in the morning, it fuels your passion, and it aligns with your core values. But finding your purpose can be challenging. It requires self-reflection, honesty, and courage to face the truths about yourself.

Take a moment to ask yourself: What makes you feel truly alive? What are you naturally drawn to? What work do you do that doesn’t feel like work? The answers to these questions can shed light on your purpose.

For more insights on this topic, I invite you to watch my YouTube video on Tips for finding your purpose in life. In this video, I share some valuable tips that can guide you in discovering your purpose and aligning it with your values.

Remember, a life without purpose is like a ship without a compass—aimless and lost. So find your compass, find your purpose, and set sail towards a fulfilling life.

8) Live authentically

In a world that often encourages conformity, living authentically seems counterintuitive. But it’s a crucial aspect of leading a values-based life.

To live authentically, you need to honor your true self—your values, passions, desires—over societal expectations or external pressures. It means living in alignment with who you truly are and not being afraid to show it to the world.

Living authentically can feel uncomfortable and vulnerable at first. After all, it requires you to expose your true self, warts and all. But this vulnerability is also your strength. It allows you to live with integrity, make meaningful connections, and ultimately leads to a fulfilling life.

Remember, authenticity is the daily practice of letting go of who we think we’re supposed to be and embracing who we are. So be brave, embrace your authentic self, and live a life that’s truly yours.

In conclusion, living a values-based life is an art—it requires self-awareness, courage, and commitment to align your actions with your core values. But the rewards are profoundly fulfilling.

Remember, your life is your journey and you’re the captain of your ship. Every decision you make, every goal you set, every habit you change is a step towards a more meaningful life.

And if you ever feel lost or need guidance, remember my course Reset Your Life Compass is here to help. It’s designed to provide you with the tools and insights you need to navigate your way to a values-based life.

So here’s to you—your journey, your values, your life. May it be filled with purpose, authenticity, and fulfillment.
