As the founder of Hack Spirit and a mindfulness/Buddhism expert, I’ve come to understand that determined individuals operate under specific habits that propel them forward in life.

In this article, we’re going to explore these 10 habits. These aren’t just random routines, but rather the common traits I’ve observed among those who consistently move forward and make the most out of life.

1) Embrace the present moment

One trait that sets determined people apart is their ability to fully embrace the present moment.

Often, many of us find ourselves either ruminating about the past or worrying about the future. However, this pattern of thought can hold us back from moving forward in life.

Determined individuals understand the importance of living in the ‘now’. They’re aware that the present moment is the only one they truly have control over.

This mindfulness approach empowers them to focus on their current actions rather than getting lost in what could have been or what might happen.

In practical terms, this means they take decisive action on their goals today, instead of putting them off for some unknown future date.

By embracing the present, determined people build a foundation that allows for consistent forward movement in their lives. This habit helps them face challenges head-on and seize opportunities as they come, rather than waiting for ‘the perfect moment’.

Mindfulness isn’t just about meditation and yoga. It’s about fully engaging with our lives in the present moment. And that’s a habit anyone can cultivate.

As a mindfulness practitioner myself, I’ve learned the significance of acceptance. It’s about acknowledging our feelings without judgement, then using that awareness as a springboard for change.

Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned Buddhist monk and mindfulness advocate, once said: “The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.”

This quote encapsulates the essence of acceptance, urging us to recognize and appreciate the present for what it is. From this place of acceptance, we can then decide how best to move forward.

Determined people apply this principle in their lives, choosing to accept their realities instead of resisting or avoiding them. This habit allows them to take more effective action towards their goals, propelling them forward in life.

3) Balance self-improvement with self-acceptance

Understanding oneself is a journey that I believe we all should embark on. One of the habits that I’ve observed in determined people is their clear understanding of their core values and their commitment to living by them.

Your core values are the guiding principles that dictate your behavior and actions. They’re your personal compass, leading you towards what truly matters to you.

These individuals know what they stand for and they aren’t easily swayed by societal pressures or trends. They align their actions with their values, giving them a sense of purpose and direction in life.

However, they don’t just set any goals. They set SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This ensures their goals are clear and within reach.

For instance, instead of saying “I want to be healthier,” a SMART goal would be “I will walk 30 minutes every day for the next month.” This goal is specific (walk 30 minutes), measurable (every day), achievable (a manageable time commitment), relevant (contributes to health), and time-bound (for the next month).

By setting clear and achievable goals, determined individuals keep themselves on track and continuously move forward in life.

Resilience is a trait that I’ve found to be common among determined individuals. It’s their ability to bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward.

Change is the only constant in life, as the Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said. Determined individuals understand this, and rather than resisting change, they embrace it.
