There’s a clear distinction between those who simply live life and those who strive to move forward.
The difference lies in determination. People who are determined push themselves beyond their comfort zone, never settling for mediocrity or stagnation.
As the founder of Hack Spirit and a mindfulness/Buddhism expert, I’ve come to understand that determined individuals operate under specific habits that propel them forward in life.
In this article, we’re going to explore these 10 habits. These aren’t just random routines, but rather the common traits I’ve observed among those who consistently move forward and make the most out of life.
If you’re ready to give your life a bit of a push, stick with me as we delve into these 10 habits of determined people who always move forward in life.
1) Embrace the present moment
One trait that sets determined people apart is their ability to fully embrace the present moment.
Often, many of us find ourselves either ruminating about the past or worrying about the future. However, this pattern of thought can hold us back from moving forward in life.
Determined individuals understand the importance of living in the ‘now’. They’re aware that the present moment is the only one they truly have control over.
This mindfulness approach empowers them to focus on their current actions rather than getting lost in what could have been or what might happen.
In practical terms, this means they take decisive action on their goals today, instead of putting them off for some unknown future date.
By embracing the present, determined people build a foundation that allows for consistent forward movement in their lives. This habit helps them face challenges head-on and seize opportunities as they come, rather than waiting for ‘the perfect moment’.
Mindfulness isn’t just about meditation and yoga. It’s about fully engaging with our lives in the present moment. And that’s a habit anyone can cultivate.
2) Cultivate an attitude of acceptance
Another habit of determined individuals is the cultivation of acceptance. This doesn’t mean they passively accept everything that happens to them. Instead, they understand and accept the reality of their current circumstances before taking action to change them.
As a mindfulness practitioner myself, I’ve learned the significance of acceptance. It’s about acknowledging our feelings without judgement, then using that awareness as a springboard for change.
Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned Buddhist monk and mindfulness advocate, once said: “The present moment is filled with joy and happiness. If you are attentive, you will see it.”
This quote encapsulates the essence of acceptance, urging us to recognize and appreciate the present for what it is. From this place of acceptance, we can then decide how best to move forward.
Determined people apply this principle in their lives, choosing to accept their realities instead of resisting or avoiding them. This habit allows them to take more effective action towards their goals, propelling them forward in life.
3) Balance self-improvement with self-acceptance
This is a concept I hold dear and it forms a key theme in my book, Hidden Secrets of Buddhism: How To Live With Maximum Impact and Minimum Ego.
Determined people constantly strive for growth and improvement, but they also understand the importance of self-acceptance.
They recognize their strengths and weaknesses, and while they work tirelessly to improve themselves, they don’t berate themselves for their shortcomings. Instead, they accept who they are at the present moment while also acknowledging their capacity to change and grow.
This balance between self-improvement and self-acceptance is crucial. It allows them to move forward without being held back by self-doubt or negative self-talk.
In my book, I delve into this topic further, explaining how Buddhism offers practical guidance on maintaining this balance and living life with maximum impact and minimum ego. It’s a must-read for anyone seeking to cultivate the habits of determined people who consistently move forward in life.
4) Maintain a growth mindset
A key habit of determined individuals is the maintenance of a growth mindset. They believe in their ability to learn, grow, and improve over time.
This concept, popularized by psychologist Carol Dweck, contrasts with a fixed mindset – the belief that our abilities are set in stone and unchangeable.
As the famous quote by Henry Ford goes: “Whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re right.”
Determined people choose to think they can. They view challenges as opportunities to learn and grow, rather than insurmountable obstacles. They understand that failure isn’t a reflection of their worth, but rather a stepping stone towards success.
In practical terms, this means embracing challenges with an open mind and a willingness to learn. It’s about seeking feedback and using it constructively to improve. And it’s about persisting in the face of setbacks, instead of giving up at the first sign of difficulty.
By fostering a growth mindset, determined individuals are constantly moving forward, growing and evolving with each challenge they face.
5) Understand and live by their core values
Understanding oneself is a journey that I believe we all should embark on. One of the habits that I’ve observed in determined people is their clear understanding of their core values and their commitment to living by them.

Your core values are the guiding principles that dictate your behavior and actions. They’re your personal compass, leading you towards what truly matters to you.
These individuals know what they stand for and they aren’t easily swayed by societal pressures or trends. They align their actions with their values, giving them a sense of purpose and direction in life.
If you’re unsure about your own values, don’t worry, you’re not alone. It’s not always an easy task to define them. That’s why I recommend checking out Life Transition coach Jeanette Brown’s exercise: Defining Your Values Exercise.
This exercise is a practical tool designed to help you identify your core values. It’s a stepping stone towards better self-understanding and, ultimately, living a life that’s true to who you are.
By understanding and living according to their core values, determined individuals are able to stay focused, make decisions that align with their beliefs, and consistently move forward in life.
6) Set clear and achievable goals
Another habit of determined people is their ability to set clear and achievable goals. They know where they want to go and they have a roadmap to get there.
Setting goals gives them a clear sense of direction and purpose. It helps them stay focused and motivated, especially when they face challenges or setbacks.
However, they don’t just set any goals. They set SMART goals – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This ensures their goals are clear and within reach.
For instance, instead of saying “I want to be healthier,” a SMART goal would be “I will walk 30 minutes every day for the next month.” This goal is specific (walk 30 minutes), measurable (every day), achievable (a manageable time commitment), relevant (contributes to health), and time-bound (for the next month).
By setting clear and achievable goals, determined individuals keep themselves on track and continuously move forward in life.
7) Practice mindful resilience
Resilience is a trait that I’ve found to be common among determined individuals. It’s their ability to bounce back from setbacks and keep moving forward.
However, they don’t just blindly push through. They practice mindful resilience. They take time to acknowledge their feelings, understand what went wrong, and learn from the experience.
Mindfulness allows them to respond to setbacks with grace and wisdom, rather than reacting impulsively or dwelling on the negative.
Personally, I’ve found mindfulness to be an invaluable tool in my own journey of resilience. It’s helped me remain grounded during tough times and has given me the clarity to navigate through challenges.
8) Embrace change
Change is the only constant in life, as the Greek philosopher Heraclitus once said. Determined individuals understand this, and rather than resisting change, they embrace it.
They see change not as something to be feared, but as an opportunity for growth and learning. They adapt and adjust their course of action as necessary, always ready to seize new opportunities that come their way.
Apple co-founder Steve Jobs once said: “Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.” This belief in embracing change and seeking innovation is a trait shared by determined individuals who consistently move forward in life.
By welcoming change and remaining adaptable, they’re able to navigate through life’s uncertainties and continue making progress towards their goals.
9) Prioritize rest and self-care
This might seem counterintuitive when talking about determined individuals who are always moving forward. But the truth is, they understand the importance of rest and self-care.
They know that to continue moving forward, they need to take care of their physical, mental, and emotional health. They understand that they can’t pour from an empty cup.
I’ve learned this lesson in my own life. There have been times when I’ve pushed myself too hard, only to find I’m unable to sustain the pace. It’s a reminder that rest isn’t a luxury, but a necessity for long-term success.
10) Keep learning and growing
The last habit of determined people who always move forward in life is continuous learning and growth.
They are lifelong learners. They seek knowledge, skills, and experiences that can help them improve and achieve their goals. They’re not afraid to step out of their comfort zone in pursuit of learning.
In practical terms, this could mean reading books, attending workshops, taking online courses, or seeking mentorship. It’s about staying curious and open to new ideas.
Conclusion
The journey to consistently moving forward in life isn’t marked by a single monumental leap, but rather a series of small, determined steps. It’s about cultivating habits that keep you resilient, focused, and engaged with your life.
From embracing the present moment and accepting reality, to setting clear goals and fostering a growth mindset, these habits can be powerful tools in propelling you forward in life.
