1) Embrace mindfulness

Let’s start with the big one: mindfulness.

You’ve probably heard of this concept before, but have you ever really tried it? I mean, truly incorporated it into your daily routine?

Mindfulness is the practice of being present and engaged in whatever you’re doing at the moment — whether you’re eating, working, or just taking a breather. It’s about appreciating the here and now, instead of constantly worrying about the past or future.

You might be wondering, how does this help me get ahead?

Well, it’s simple. Mindfulness allows you to focus on what’s important right now. It helps clear your mind of unnecessary worries and distractions, enabling you to make better decisions and take more effective actions.

And it’s not just me saying this. Research has shown that mindfulness can improve your cognitive abilities, emotional intelligence and overall well-being.

2) Cultivate gratitude

The next habit on our list is gratitude. Now, I know what you’re thinking – how can simply being thankful help me get ahead?

Well, as a mindfulness expert, I’ve seen first-hand how powerful gratitude can be. It’s not just about saying ‘thank you’ more often. It’s about truly appreciating what you have, and what others do for you.

Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s missing in your life to what’s present. It helps you value your experiences, your relationships, and even your challenges.

As the famous mindfulness expert Jon Kabat-Zinn once said, “Gratitude is a way of returning energy for energy received. One way of looking at life is that all the fuss and bother and striving are because we are looking for energy in its various forms to keep ourselves going. Gratitude reminds us to give back.”

3) Live with maximum impact and minimum ego

5) Understand your core values

One of the most transformative habits I’ve developed is getting to know myself better, particularly understanding my core values.

Our values shape our decisions, our actions, and ultimately, our lives. But how many of us can honestly say we know what our core values are?

A few years ago, I couldn’t. But then I stumbled upon a fantastic values exercise by Life Transition coach Jeanette Brown. Defining Your Values Exercise is a simple but powerful tool that helped me understand my core values and how they influence my life.

One habit that has really transformed my life and perspective is practicing self-compassion. As a mindfulness practitioner, I’ve realised that being kind to myself is not a luxury but a necessity.

We can be our own worst critics. We beat ourselves up over mistakes, compare ourselves to others, and set impossibly high standards. But all this does is drain our energy and dampen our spirits.

Self-compassion, on the other hand, teaches us to treat ourselves with the same kindness and understanding we would offer a friend. It’s about acknowledging that we’re human and it’s okay to make mistakes.

Practicing self-compassion doesn’t mean you’re giving yourself a free pass to slack off. Instead, it allows you to learn from your mistakes and move forward without the burden of self-criticism.

When you stumble, don’t beat yourself up. Instead, treat yourself with kindness, learn from the experience, and keep moving forward. Trust me, it will make your journey towards success much more enjoyable.

8) Embrace failure

No one likes to fail. But the truth is, failure is an integral part of success.

As the great inventor Thomas Edison once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.”

That’s the beauty of failure. It’s not a dead end, but a stepping stone towards success. It’s an opportunity to learn, grow, and become stronger.

9) Take time to do nothing

Now, this might sound counterintuitive. After all, how can doing nothing help you get ahead?

But as someone who has a tendency to overwork, I’ve learned the hard way that taking breaks is not just beneficial — it’s essential.

When we’re constantly on the go, our minds and bodies never get a chance to rest and recharge. Over time, this can lead to burnout, which is a surefire way to stall your progress.

So make it a habit to take regular breaks. It could be as simple as stepping away from your desk for five minutes every hour or setting aside one day a week to completely unplug.

During these breaks, try not to do anything productive. Just relax and let your mind wander. You’ll be surprised at how refreshed and focused you feel when you get back to work.

Productivity isn’t about doing more — it’s about doing better. And sometimes, doing better means doing less.

10) Set clear goals

Last, but certainly not least, is setting clear goals. If you don’t know where you’re going, how can you expect to get there?

Start by identifying what you want to achieve in the next 5 years. Then, break it down into smaller, more manageable goals. This could be yearly, monthly, or even daily goals.

Make sure your goals are SMART – Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. This will give you a clear roadmap to follow and make it easier to track your progress.
