If you really want to change your life, start doing these 10 things every day

There’s a huge difference between wanting to change your life and actually doing something about it.

The difference comes down to action. Wanting change is great, but without action, it’s just wishful thinking.

Taking daily actions, however, can transform your life in unimaginable ways.

As Lachlan Brown, Hack Spirit founder and mindfulness/Buddhism expert, I’ve learned that there are specific things you can do every day that can massively improve your life.

Let’s get started.

1) Start with mindfulness

The first step towards changing your life is often the most overlooked. It’s mindfulness.

As a mindfulness and Buddhism expert, I can assure you it’s more than just a passing trend. Mindfulness is the practice of being present, of focusing on the here and now instead of worrying about the past or future.

Sound simple? Well, it’s not quite so easy when you’re bombarded with distractions and stressors. But it’s worth it.

Studies have shown that practicing mindfulness can reduce stress, increase focus, and improve relationships. It’s the cornerstone of leading a balanced life.

So how do you start? Just take 10 minutes every day to sit quietly and focus on your breath. Observe your thoughts without judgment. And be patient with yourself; it takes practice.

But remember, every breath is a new opportunity to be mindful. And every moment of mindfulness is a step towards changing your life for the better.

2) Embrace impermanence

Change is the only constant in life. This is a truth I’ve personally embraced and one that’s central to Buddhist teachings.

Impermanence is the belief that everything changes and nothing lasts forever, not even our worries or difficulties.

Once we truly accept this, we can stop resisting the natural flow of life and start sailing with it. We can let go of our fears and anxieties about the future, knowing that just as good times don’t last, neither do the bad ones.

Thich Nhat Hanh, a renowned Zen Buddhist monk, once said, “Thanks to impermanence, everything is possible.”

This quote perfectly captures the essence of embracing change. It reminds us that every ending is a new beginning and that it’s never too late to change our lives for the better.

Try to remind yourself of this truth every day. It’s a powerful way to stay grounded during turbulent times and to remain hopeful during hardships. After all, change is not just a part of life; it’s what allows us to grow and evolve.

3) Practice compassion

One of the most transformative changes you can make in your life is to practice compassion every day.

Compassion is not just about feeling sorry for others. It’s about understanding their pain and suffering, and actively wanting to alleviate it. It’s about connecting on a deep, human level.

But compassion isn’t limited to others. It’s equally important to show compassion towards yourself. We are often our harshest critics, but we all make mistakes. What matters is how we learn from them and move forward.

As the famous mindfulness expert Jon Kabat-Zinn said, “Mindfulness is the aware, balanced acceptance of the present experience. It isn’t more complicated than that. It is opening to or receiving the present moment, pleasant or unpleasant, just as it is, without either clinging to it or rejecting it.”

This sentiment perfectly applies to gratitude. Each day, take a few moments to acknowledge and appreciate what you have. It could be something as simple as enjoying a cup of coffee, the warmth of the sun on your skin, or the joy of a good book.

Gratitude helps us focus on the positives in our lives and this shift in perspective can lead to a more contented and fulfilling life. And don’t forget, gratitude doesn’t require monumental events; it’s about finding joy in the everyday.

5) Understand your core values

Knowing yourself is the beginning of all wisdom. It’s a journey I’ve been on myself, and it’s been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life.

One of the most crucial parts of this journey is understanding your core values. These are the fundamental beliefs that guide your behavior, decisions, and actions.

Knowing your core values can give you purpose, direction, and a clearer sense of self. It helps you understand what truly matters to you, and this can be a powerful catalyst for change.

A helpful tool in identifying your core values is this “Defining Your Values” exercise by Life Transition Coach Jeanette Brown. It’s a practical exercise that guides you through the process of identifying what’s most important to you.

Take some time each day to reflect on your values. Remember, the key to living a fulfilling life lies in aligning your actions with your values. Once you understand what drives you, every decision becomes simpler and every day feels more meaningful.

6) Set daily goals

Setting daily goals is a simple yet effective way to bring about change in your life.

Goals give you a sense of direction. They give you something to aim for and a reason to get up in the morning. They also provide a sense of accomplishment when you achieve them.

But remember, these don’t have to be monumental tasks. It could be as simple as reading for 30 minutes, taking a walk, or cooking a healthy meal. The key is consistency.

Each morning, jot down what you want to achieve that day. It could be work-related, personal growth, or even leisure activities.

Then, at the end of the day, take a moment to reflect on your accomplishments. This practice not only keeps you focused and motivated but also contributes to your overall sense of well-being and satisfaction.

7) Practice mindful communication

Communication is at the heart of human interaction. But how often do we really pay attention to how we communicate?

As a mindfulness practitioner, I’ve learned that mindful communication can significantly improve our relationships and interactions.

Mindful communication is about being present and attentive in our conversations. It’s about listening to understand, not just to respond. It’s about being aware of our words, tone, and body language, and how they can impact others.

Try this: The next time you have a conversation, make a conscious effort to really listen. Put away distractions and focus on the other person. Respond thoughtfully instead of reactively.

It’s a small change, but it can make a big difference. By improving the way we communicate, we can foster better understanding, empathy and connection in our relationships.

8) Embrace learning

Lifelong learning is a key to personal growth and fulfillment.

Just as the great Albert Einstein once said, “Once you stop learning, you start dying.” This quote perfectly encapsulates the importance of embracing learning in our daily lives.

Learning doesn’t stop when we leave school. It’s an ongoing process that enriches our lives in countless ways. It opens our minds, broadens our perspectives, and challenges us to think in new ways.

Make it a goal to learn something new every day. It could be reading a book, taking up a new hobby, or even exploring a new idea or concept. The opportunities for learning are endless if we’re open to them.

Keep that curiosity alive and remember, every day is a chance to learn and grow.

9) Allow yourself to do nothing

This might sound counterintuitive, especially in a world that glorifies busyness. But hear me out.

Doing nothing is not about being lazy or unproductive. It’s about giving yourself permission to rest, to recharge, and to just be.

In my personal journey, I’ve found that some of the most profound moments of clarity and inspiration have come when I’ve allowed myself to simply do nothing.

Take some time every day to just be with yourself, with no agenda or task at hand. It could be sitting quietly in a park or even just staring out the window.

This quiet time can help you reconnect with yourself, quieten the noise of daily life, and even spark creativity. So go on and give yourself the gift of doing nothing. You might be surprised at what emerges from these moments of stillness.

10) Prioritize physical health

Last but definitely not least, prioritize your physical health.

Physical health is the foundation of our overall well-being. It’s hard to feel good mentally if we’re not feeling good physically.

So make it a point to do something every day that benefits your physical health. It could be going for a walk, doing yoga, cooking a healthy meal, or even just getting enough sleep.

It’s not about drastic changes or intense workouts. It’s about small, consistent efforts that add up over time.

Your body is your home for life. Treat it with care, respect, and love. After all, a healthy body is one of the greatest gifts you can give yourself.
