If you can’t remember the last time you felt excited by life, say goodbye to these 7 habits

Life can be exciting, full of wonder, and bursting with potential. But sometimes, we may find ourselves trapped in a rut, lacking the spark that used to ignite our enthusiasm.

Often, this isn’t because life has become less inspiring, but because certain habits have dulled our ability to see, feel, and grasp the fascination around us.

These habits can subtly drain our vitality and make everything seem monotonous. If you’re wondering where that zest for life has gone, it might be time to evaluate your daily routine and say goodbye to some detrimental practices.

Here are seven habits you might need to let go of to rekindle your excitement for life.

1) Living in the past or future

Life is a journey, one that unfolds in the present moment. Yet, many of us find ourselves trapped in memories of the past or anxieties about the future. And this habit can steal away the joy and excitement of the now.

The past is a place of learning, not living. While it’s essential to reflect on past experiences for growth, dwelling on regrets and ‘what-ifs’ can drain our energy and fill us with unnecessary sorrow.

Similarly, constantly worrying about the future robs us of our capacity to act in the present. While it’s wise to plan and prepare for what lies ahead, incessant anxiety about things beyond our control can lead to a life dominated by fear and apprehension.

The key is to cultivate mindfulness and presence. By choosing to fully engage with the present moment, we open ourselves up to the beauty, opportunities, and excitement life has to offer right here and now. Saying goodbye to this habit of time-travel may not be easy, but it’s a vital step towards reigniting our zest for life.

2) Neglecting self-care

In our quest to keep up with the pace of life, we often neglect the most important person – ourselves. Many of us are guilty of putting our own needs and well-being on the back burner. But when self-care is sacrificed, our energy dwindles, along with our enthusiasm for life.

Self-care isn’t about indulgence, nor is it a sign of selfishness. It’s about acknowledging that we are deserving of our own time, attention, and care. It’s about nourishing our body, mind, and spirit so that we can show up in the world as the best versions of ourselves.

Whether it’s through a nutritious meal, a rejuvenating walk in nature, or simply giving ourselves permission to rest, self-care is an essential habit for a vibrant and exciting life.

As I’ve come to understand this, I’ve prioritized self-care in my routine. And I urge you to do the same. You’ll be surprised at the renewed sense of vigor you’ll feel.

In the words of the renowned psychologist Carl Rogers, “The curious paradox is that when I accept myself just as I am, then I can change.” Let’s start by accepting that we deserve our own care and attention.

3) Overcommitting yourself

In our drive to be productive, successful, and helpful, we often end up overcommitting ourselves. We take on too many tasks, juggle multiple roles, and say yes to everything, leaving little room to breathe. This habit can leave us feeling overwhelmed, stressed, and exhausted, draining the excitement from our lives.

Remember, it’s essential to guard your time and energy. It’s okay to say no when you’re overburdened or when something doesn’t align with your values or priorities. Creating boundaries and practicing discernment in what we commit to can make room for more joy and spontaneity in our lives.

I delve deeper into this concept in my video on personal freedom hacks. One of the key points I discuss is the importance of breaking free from societal expectations and pressures, including the need to always be ‘busy’. This shift can help us live more authentically and contentedly.

As the great philosopher Socrates once said, “Beware the barrenness of a busy life.” Let’s learn to prioritize our well-being and personal freedom over constant busyness.

4) Ignoring your creative potential

Creativity isn’t just about producing art or inventing new things. It’s about seeing the world with fresh eyes, finding innovative solutions to problems, and expressing our unique perspectives. Yet, many of us tend to suppress our creative potential, often due to fear of judgment or failure.

The truth is, when we ignore our creativity, we deny ourselves the excitement and fulfillment that comes from exploring our unique capacities. We limit our growth, stifle our self-expression, and miss out on the joy of creation.

Creativity is inherent in all of us. It’s not about being perfect or meeting external standards. It’s about daring to explore, experiment, and express ourselves in ways that feel authentic to us.

So, whether it’s writing a poem, designing a new project at work, experimenting with a recipe in the kitchen, or simply finding a new way to approach a daily task – tap into your creative potential. Celebrate it. You’ll be amazed at how it can rekindle your excitement for life.

Remember the words of Brené Brown, “Unused creativity is not benign. It metastasizes. It turns into grief, rage, judgment, sorrow, shame.” Let’s not let our unused creativity turn into regret. Embrace it and let it fuel your life with joy and excitement.

5) Avoiding challenging situations

We often shy away from challenging situations out of fear of failure, discomfort, or the unknown. Yet, by avoiding these challenges, we rob ourselves of valuable growth opportunities and the thrill that comes from overcoming obstacles.

Challenging situations push us out of our comfort zones, forcing us to confront our fears and limitations. They demand creativity, resilience, and adaptability – qualities that not only enhance our personal growth but also make life more exciting.

So, the next time you encounter a challenging situation, don’t run from it. Embrace it. See it as an opportunity to learn, grow, and tap into your innate potential. Each challenge faced and overcome is a testament to your strength and a stepping stone to a life lived with courage and authenticity.

In one of my videos, I explore the idea of embracing obstacles and setbacks as opportunities for growth and learning. I discuss how viewing failure as feedback can lead to significant personal transformation and empowerment.

Remember, as Thomas Edison once said, “I have not failed. I’ve just found 10,000 ways that won’t work.” Let’s reframe our perspective on challenges and see them as exciting prospects for innovation rather than daunting hurdles.

6) Chasing happiness

It may sound strange, but one habit that can rob us of the excitement of life is incessantly chasing happiness. When we’re constantly seeking happiness, we create a perpetual cycle of desire and dissatisfaction. This quest turns happiness into a destination, something to be achieved in the future, rather than a state to be experienced in the present.

Moreover, this pursuit often leaves us blind to the joy and wonder in our current experiences. We overlook the small moments of contentment, joy, and beauty in our everyday lives while seeking some grand, elusive state of perpetual happiness.

Instead of chasing happiness, strive for authenticity. Embrace your full range of emotions – not just the positive ones. Allow yourself to feel sadness, anger, and fear without judgement. These emotions are as much a part of life as joy and contentment.

In my video on “the illusion of happiness,” I delve deeper into this paradoxical concept. I discuss how true contentment comes from within – by embracing life’s challenges, fostering meaningful relationships, and staying true to oneself.

As philosopher Alan Watts said, “The meaning of life is just to be alive. It is so plain and so obvious and so simple. And yet, everybody rushes around in a great panic as if it were necessary to achieve something beyond themselves.” Let’s start living our lives fully in the present moment, rather than always pursuing an elusive future state of happiness.

7) Isolating yourself

We are social beings. Our relationships with others give our lives meaning, enrich our experiences, and provide a support system that helps us navigate life’s ups and downs. Despite this, many of us have a habit of isolating ourselves, especially when we’re going through challenging times.

Isolation may seem like an easy solution to avoid conflict, disappointment, or vulnerability. However, in truth, it only leads to loneliness, a lack of perspective, and missed opportunities for growth that come from interacting with others.

Fostering authentic connections and supportive communities is vital for a fulfilling life. It’s through our relationships that we find the courage to pursue our dreams, the resilience to face challenges, and the joy of shared experiences.

So, reach out. Engage with your friends, family, and even make new connections. Participate in community events or initiatives that resonate with your values. Remember, no one thrives alone.

As poet John Donne wisely said, “No man is an island entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent.” Let’s cherish our connections and recognize their vital role in our lives. Embracing our interconnectedness can bring a renewed sense of excitement and purpose to our lives.

The Power of Conscious Choices

Our feelings of excitement and engagement with life are often the result of the choices we make. These choices are not just about grand life decisions, but also about our everyday habits and behaviors.

From the way we perceive challenges to the value we place on relationships, from how we spend our time to the thoughts we entertain – each choice shapes our experience of life.

By saying goodbye to these seven habits, we are choosing to live with greater authenticity, mindfulness, and respect for ourselves and others. We are choosing to embrace our creative potential, to engage fully with the present moment, and to foster meaningful connections.

Each shift might seem small in isolation, but together, they can lead to a profound transformation in the way we experience life. They can reignite our sense of excitement, curiosity, and wonder.

As we consciously choose these new ways of being, remember the words of Ralph Waldo Emerson: “Life is a journey, not a destination.” Let’s make this journey one of excitement, growth, and authenticity. After all, it’s not just about where we end up, but about who we become along the way.
