Aging and happiness are two sides of the same coin. What you choose to do or not to do today can make all the difference in your golden years.
Over the years, I’ve learned that certain habits can either make or break your happiness as you age.
It’s not just about giving up unhealthy habits but also about embracing new ones that can enhance your joy and satisfaction in life.
Here I’ll share 8 habits you need to say goodbye to if you want to be happy as you get older. So, are you ready to start this journey towards a happier, more satisfying older age? Keep reading!
1) Embrace change
Life is all about changes, and embracing them is key to happiness as you age.
As we grow older, it’s easy to get comfortable and resist change. It’s human nature to stick with what’s familiar. But the truth is, life is constantly evolving and so should we.
Avoiding change can create a stagnant life which eventually leads to dissatisfaction. On the contrary, embracing change opens up new possibilities. It gives you the opportunity to learn, grow and experience new things.
So if you want to be happy as you age, say goodbye to your resistance to change. It might be uncomfortable at first but remember, stepping outside of your comfort zone is where the magic happens.
As a Life Transition coach, I’ve seen numerous people navigate their way to a more fulfilling life by simply embracing change.
2) Understand your core values
In the journey of getting older, understanding yourself and what you truly value becomes crucial to your happiness.
As the famous psychologist Carl Jung once said, “Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakes.” The more you understand about your own values, the more you can align your actions with what truly matters to you.
This alignment is the key to feeling fulfilled and content as you age. It’s like a compass guiding you towards decisions and actions that resonate with your true self.
I’ve seen people transform their lives when they started to live in alignment with their core values. And guess what? You can do it too!
I have developed a Defining Your Values Exercise that can help you identify and understand your core values. It’s a simple tool, but it can make a world of difference in helping you live a life that feels true to yourself. So go ahead, say goodbye to living without understanding your values and say hello to a happier, more fulfilling older age.
3) Set meaningful goals
As we get older, it’s easy to lose sight of our goals. Often, we get caught up in the busyness of life, or we simply stop setting goals because we think it’s too late to achieve them.
Without goals, life can become aimless and unfulfilling.
Setting meaningful goals keeps us motivated and purpose-driven. It gives us something to strive for and brings a sense of accomplishment when we achieve them.
Don’t just set any goals though. Set ones that align with your values and passions. Goals that make you want to jump out of bed in the morning.
So if you’ve stopped setting goals or are just going through the motions, it’s time to say goodbye to that habit. Start setting meaningful goals and watch how they add more happiness to your life as you get older. It’s never too late to set a new goal or dream a new dream!
4) Steer your own life
The older we get, the more we may feel like life is just happening to us. But at the end of the day you’re the captain of your own ship.
Too often, we let others steer our lives. We follow advice or paths that might not be right for us, all because we’re afraid of taking the wheel. But doing so can lead to a life filled with regret and “what ifs?”
The key to happiness as you age is taking control of your life. It’s about making conscious choices about where you want to go and what you want to do, rather than being a passive bystander.
So if you’ve been letting others or circumstances dictate your path, it’s time to say goodbye to that habit. Grab the wheel, set your course and steer your life towards happiness and fulfillment!
5) Journal your thoughts
The power of journaling can be astounding.
Writing down your thoughts, ideas, and feelings can help you gain a deeper understanding of yourself. It allows you to reflect on your life and identify patterns, habits, and themes that might be impacting your happiness.
Journaling is like having a conversation with yourself. It’s a safe space where you can express anything without judgment.
It’s a tool I heavily emphasize in my course, Reset Your Life Compass. This course is designed to help you navigate through life’s transitions and steer your life toward happiness and fulfillment.
If you’re not already journaling, it’s a habit worth adopting. Say goodbye to keeping your thoughts bottled up and say hello to the self-exploration and clarity that comes with journaling. It can be a game-changer in your journey to a happier older age.
6) Change your habits successfully
Changing habits is not an easy task, but it’s crucial for living a better life as you age.
We all have habits that are hard to break, even if they’re not serving us well. Whether it’s procrastination, negative thinking, or unhealthy eating, these habits can significantly impact our happiness.
The key to successfully changing your habits is to replace them with new ones. It’s not about getting rid of a habit but rather substituting it with a healthier one.
So if you’re struggling with habits that are holding you back from being happy as you get older, it’s time to say goodbye to them. Start today, one habit at a time. Remember, small changes can lead to big results. It’s never too late to change your habits and live a happier life!
7) Find your purpose
Living a purpose-driven life is not just for the young. In fact, it’s even more important as we age.
As the famous philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” A life without purpose can feel aimless and unfulfilling, no matter how old you are.
Finding your purpose doesn’t mean you have to make earth-shattering changes or impact millions of lives. It could be as simple as taking care of your grandchildren, volunteering at a local shelter, or sharing your wisdom with others.
So if you find yourself just going through the motions without a clear sense of purpose, it’s time to say goodbye to that habit. Instead, strive to find what lights you up and gives your life meaning.

8) Live authentically
Here’s a counterintuitive truth: the key to happiness as you age is not about trying to be someone else, but about being more of who you truly are.
In a world that often values youth over wisdom, it’s easy to fall into the trap of trying to fit in or be something we’re not. But living unauthentically can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction and unhappiness.
Being authentic means embracing your strengths and weaknesses, expressing your true feelings, and not being afraid to stand out from the crowd. It’s about living in alignment with your values and being true to yourself.
So if you’ve been hiding behind a mask, it’s time to say goodbye to that habit. Start living authentically and you’ll see how it leads to greater happiness and fulfillment as you age. Remember, there’s no one better at being you than you!
In conclusion, aging doesn’t have to be synonymous with unhappiness. By saying goodbye to these 8 habits, you can steer your life towards greater happiness and satisfaction as you age.
Aging is a journey, not a destination. It’s about continuously growing, learning, and embracing the changes that come with each passing year.
