Navigating life isn’t always a cakewalk. There are times when you might feel lost, unsure which way to turn. Often, it’s certain habits that hold us back, keeping us stuck in the same old patterns.
Hi, I’m Jeanette Brown, creator of Reset Your Life Compass. Over the years, I’ve found that saying goodbye to a few specific habits can make all the difference.
It’s not about blaming yourself, but rather recognizing what’s not serving you and having the courage to let go. Here are 8 habits you might want to reconsider if you’re feeling lost.
1) Embracing change
Life is full of twists and turns. And sometimes, we feel lost simply because we are resisting change.
You see, change is inevitable. It’s the one constant in life that we can always count on. But how we react to it? That’s entirely up to us.
Often, we hold onto habits or situations that are comfortable and familiar, even if they’re not serving us well. It’s human nature to crave stability and predictability. But this resistance to change can leave us feeling stuck and lost.
As a Life Transition Coach, I’ve seen this time and time again. People feel lost, and often it’s because they’re clinging to old habits that are no longer serving them.
Let go of the need for certainty. Embrace change as an opportunity for growth and new experiences. It may be scary at first, but trust me, it opens up a world of possibilities.
Navigating through change is not about finding a predefined path but creating your own. So if you’re feeling lost, say goodbye to the habit of resisting change. Embrace the unknown and navigate your way to a more fulfilling life.
2) Understanding yourself
Knowing who you are and what you stand for is fundamental to finding direction in life. Yet, so many of us lose sight of our core values, often because we’re too busy trying to fit into societal norms or striving for external validation.
There’s a quote by Oscar Wilde that I absolutely love. He said, “Be yourself; everyone else is already taken”. And how true it is!
In my journey as a Life Transition Coach, I’ve met countless individuals who were feeling lost because they were living lives that weren’t aligned with their true selves. And it’s no surprise – if you’re constantly going against your grain, how can you expect to feel grounded and clear-headed?
So take a step back and do some soul-searching. Understand who you are at your core and what truly matters to you. Then align your actions with these values.
Saying goodbye to the habit of living someone else’s life and embracing your authentic self is the first step towards finding direction and purpose. Remember, the only person you need to be is you.
3) Setting meaningful goals
Let’s get real here. If you’re feeling lost, it might be because you’re aimlessly wandering through life without clear, meaningful goals.
Goals are like a compass. They provide direction and keep us focused on where we want to go. Without them, we can easily get swept up in the currents of life, drifting aimlessly and feeling lost.
But here’s the catch – not all goals are created equal. Chasing after superficial or external goals – like money, fame or societal approval – can often leave us feeling empty and unfulfilled.
So what should you do? Set goals that are meaningful to you. Goals that align with your values and contribute to your personal growth and happiness. Goals that challenge you, but also bring joy and fulfillment.
Saying goodbye to aimless wandering and embracing the habit of setting meaningful goals can provide the clarity and direction you need to feel less lost. It’s not always an easy task, but trust me, it’s worth it.
4) Steering your own ship
If you’re feeling lost, it might be because you’ve handed over the steering wheel of your life to someone else.
It’s easy to fall into the trap of letting others dictate your path – be it parents, partners, or society at large. But remember, you are the captain of your own ship. Only you can steer it in the direction that feels right for you.
It’s time to take back control. Start making decisions based on what you want for your life, not what others expect of you.
Don’t get me wrong. It’s not about disregarding advice or feedback from others. It’s about recognizing that at the end of the day, you are responsible for your own journey.

Saying goodbye to the habit of letting others steer your course and reclaiming control of your own destiny can bring a sense of empowerment and clarity that helps alleviate feelings of being lost. It’s a tough transition, but a necessary one if you want to find your true path.
5) Journaling your journey
Here’s a little secret I want to share. One of the most powerful tools I’ve discovered in my coaching practice is the act of journaling. Yes, good old-fashioned pen and paper.
Journaling helps you reflect on your thoughts, emotions, and experiences. It allows you to understand yourself better and gain clarity about what you really want from life. It’s like having a conversation with your inner self, unraveling layers of your mind that often remain unexplored.
In fact, I believe so strongly in the power of journaling that I’ve incorporated it as a key component in my course, Reset Your Life Compass.
By writing down your thoughts, feelings, and aspirations, you can gain a deeper understanding of yourself and what truly matters to you. This can be immensely helpful when you’re feeling lost and unsure of which way to turn.
So say goodbye to the habit of suppressing your thoughts and feelings. Embrace the practice of journaling and witness the transformative impact it can have on your life. As they say, the pen is mightier than the sword – let’s use it to carve out our path.
6) Changing habits successfully
Let’s face it – changing habits is hard. We’re creatures of routine and comfort. The familiar feels safe, even when it’s not serving us well. But here’s the truth – if we want to stop feeling lost, we need to make changes.
Think about it this way – your current habits have led you to where you are now. If you’re not happy with that, then something needs to change.
So how do we change habits successfully? Start small. Don’t try to overhaul your entire life overnight. Pick one habit you want to change and focus on that. Once it feels more natural, move on to the next one.
Remember, the goal is progress, not perfection. Every small step you take towards changing your habits is a victory in itself.
So, say goodbye to the habit of resisting change. Embrace the challenge of transforming your habits one step at a time. It might feel daunting at first, but with patience and perseverance, you can navigate your way towards a more fulfilling life.
7) Finding your purpose
If you’re feeling lost, it might be because you’re lacking a sense of purpose in your life. Purpose is the fuel that drives us, the compass that guides us in our journey. Without it, we can feel aimless and adrift.
The famous philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how”. This quote beautifully captures the power of purpose. When you have a compelling reason to live, you can overcome almost any obstacle.
But finding your purpose isn’t always easy. It requires introspection and honesty with yourself. It’s about identifying what truly lights you up and gives your life meaning.
So say goodbye to aimlessly drifting through life. Start seeking what gives your life purpose and meaning. It might take time and effort, but it’s worth it. After all, a life with purpose is a life well-lived.
8) Embracing imperfection
Here’s something you might not expect. If you’re feeling lost, it could be because you’re striving for perfection. Yes, you heard that right. Perfection.
We live in a world that often glorifies perfection. But chasing after it can leave us feeling stressed, inadequate and, ironically, lost. Why? Because perfection is an illusion. It’s an unreachable standard that keeps us from embracing who we truly are – flaws and all.
Living authentically means acknowledging and accepting our imperfections. It means understanding that it’s okay to make mistakes, to have weaknesses, to be human.
So say goodbye to the habit of pursuing perfection. Start embracing your authentic, imperfect self. It might feel counterintuitive at first, but trust me, it’s liberating. And it’s a vital step towards finding your true path and feeling less lost in life.
Feeling lost can be a challenging experience, but remember, it’s also an opportunity for growth and self-discovery. By saying goodbye to these eight habits, you’re opening the door to a more fulfilling and authentic life.
Remember, change is a journey, not a destination. Take small steps, be patient with yourself, and celebrate your progress. You have the power to steer your life in the direction you desire.
