There’s a fine line between solitude and loneliness.
I’m Jeanette Brown, creator of Reset Your Life Compass. I’ve noticed that people who value their alone time, like me, often steer clear from certain activities that zap our energy.
Being alone can be energizing for some, a chance to recharge and introspect. But not all activities are created equal – some can drain your energy faster than you think.
In this article, we’ll explore eight energy-draining activities that those of us who cherish our alone time usually avoid.
So if you’re someone who values solitude, or just curious about how to make the most of it, read on.
1) Engaging in non-stop socializing
People who relish their alone time know that non-stop socializing can be one of the biggest energy drainers.
Now, don’t get me wrong. There’s absolutely nothing wrong with socializing. After all, we are social beings. But there’s a big difference between meaningful social interactions and those that just leave us exhausted.
Continuous socializing, especially without any breaks, can be mentally and emotionally taxing. Those who cherish their solitude often understand this and choose to engage in interactions that enrich them rather than drain them.
This doesn’t mean you have to become a hermit. It’s all about balance and knowing your limits. By being mindful of how you spend your energy, you’re empowering yourself to embrace change and navigate your way to a more fulfilling life.
Remember, it’s okay to say no sometimes. Prioritizing your wellbeing isn’t selfish, it’s necessary.
2) Over-committing to responsibilities
As someone who cherishes her alone time, I’ve learned how over-committing can quickly deplete my energy reserves.
Sometimes we take on too many responsibilities because we don’t want to disappoint others, or we’re trying to prove something to ourselves. But over time, this can become draining and detrimental to our well-being.
To quote the great Eleanor Roosevelt, “No one can make you feel inferior without your consent.” Understanding this helps us realize that we don’t need to overcommit to validate our worth.
Understanding yourself and your core values is essential in maintaining your energy levels. It helps you recognize what truly matters to you and allows you to focus your energies where they are most needed.
If you’re unsure about what your core values are or how to align your life with them, I would recommend trying out my Defining Your Values Exercise. This exercise is designed to help you gain clarity about what’s truly important to you and can be a powerful tool in managing your energy levels.
3) Setting unattainable goals
Now, let’s talk about something many of us are guilty of – setting unattainable goals.
It’s easy to get caught up in the excitement of a new project or idea and set lofty goals that seem achievable in the moment. But over time, these unrealistic expectations can become a constant source of stress and drain our energy.
Setting goals is important, but it’s equally important to ensure they are realistic and aligned with our capabilities. It’s not about setting the bar low; it’s about setting it at a height that challenges us but doesn’t overwhelm us.
Being honest with ourselves about our capabilities isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of self-awareness and understanding. It saves us from unnecessary stress and frees up our energy to focus on attainable goals that can truly enrich our lives.
Remember, the goal is progress, not perfection. Acknowledging this can help us navigate our lives more efficiently and set meaningful goals that contribute positively to our overall well-being.
4) Neglecting self-care
Self-care is not a luxury, it’s a necessity. And people who value their alone time understand this.
When we neglect to take care of ourselves, whether it be physically, emotionally, or mentally, we are essentially setting ourselves up for burnout. It’s like trying to steer a ship without maintaining it – eventually, it will start to fall apart.
Self-care isn’t just about bubble baths and spa days. It’s about listening to our bodies and our minds, giving them what they need to function optimally. It’s about setting boundaries and making time for things that replenish us.
When we make self-care a priority, we’re not just taking care of our wellbeing; we’re also steering the direction of our lives. We’re ensuring that we have the energy and resilience to navigate whatever comes our way.
So remember, don’t skimp on self-care. Your future self will thank you.

Allow me to share something important with you – the power of journaling.

Journaling is more than just writing down your thoughts. It’s a powerful tool for self-discovery, reflection, and personal growth. And for those who value their alone time, it can be a game-changer.
When we journal, we give ourselves the permission to explore our thoughts and emotions without judgment. We create a safe space for self-expression, which can lead to significant insights and breakthroughs.
But here’s the thing – journaling is not always easy. It requires commitment and honesty. But trust me, it’s worth it. It’s like having a personal roadmap to your soul.

6) Sticking to old, draining habits
We all have them – habits that no longer serve us. Yet, we stick to them out of comfort, familiarity, or simply because changing seems too daunting.
But here’s the truth – old, draining habits can significantly affect our energy levels and overall quality of life.
Those who cherish their alone time often understand the importance of letting go of these habits. They recognize that change is necessary for growth and personal development.
Changing habits isn’t easy; it requires self-awareness, commitment, and patience. But the results can be life-changing. It can lead to a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life.
So take a good look at your habits. Are they serving you or draining you? Remember, you are in control of your actions. And sometimes, changing one small habit can create a ripple effect leading to significant changes in your life.
7) Living without purpose
Living without a sense of purpose can be incredibly draining.
When we drift through life aimlessly, without a clear sense of direction or purpose, we often end up feeling lost, unfulfilled, and exhausted. It’s like trying to paddle upstream without a paddle – it’s tiring and demoralizing.
As the great philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once said, “He who has a why to live can bear almost any how.” Having a sense of purpose gives our life meaning and direction. It fuels our motivation and drives us to overcome challenges.
Finding your purpose isn’t always an easy journey. It requires introspection, self-discovery, and sometimes, a fair bit of trial and error. But it’s a journey worth undertaking.
If you’re struggling to find your purpose, I’ve created a video, Find your Reason that might help. In this video, I share some of my personal experiences and provide tips on how you can start your journey towards finding your purpose.
Remember, life becomes a lot more fulfilling when you’re living with purpose.

8) Trying to fit in
Here’s something you might not expect – trying to fit in can be incredibly draining.
In our quest to belong and be accepted, we sometimes lose ourselves. We conform to societal norms, suppress our true selves, and strive to meet others’ expectations. But this often leads to feelings of dissatisfaction, exhaustion, and inauthenticity.
Those who cherish their alone time often understand the value of authenticity. They realize that trying to fit into a mold that doesn’t align with their true selves is like running a marathon with a heavy backpack – it slows you down and drains your energy.
Living authentically isn’t always easy. It requires courage, self-awareness, and the willingness to stand out from the crowd. But the rewards are immense. It leads to a deeper sense of fulfillment, self-acceptance, and inner peace.
So remember, don’t be afraid to be yourself. Your uniqueness is your strength. And living authentically is one of the most liberating things you can do for yourself.
In conclusion, cherishing your alone time doesn’t mean you have to isolate yourself from the world. It’s about being mindful of how you spend your energy and making choices that align with your well-being.
Remember, it’s okay to say no sometimes, to set boundaries, and to take care of yourself. These aren’t signs of selfishness but indicators of self-awareness and self-respect.
